The kids and I look forward to receiving the Toys R Us Christmas catalog every year. As we were thumbing through oooing and ahhing on Sunday, imagine my delight to stumble upon Hasbro's latest treasure prominently advertised: a Ouija Board. In pink, even. It's not that I am not a believer in The Dark Arts. I am a believer, which is precisely why I take issue with the presence of a Ouija Board at a toy store. There are many grey areas in this world.
This one is black.
I posted this on our forum yesterday at Mile High Mamas and I was surprised there were many people who did not take issue with it. The Ouija Board is targeted for ages 8-12. So, my question for you is this: would you buy your 8-year-old child a Ouija Board?
At Halloween, there is a lot of talk of spirits and hauntings. I choose to focus on the fun side of it with pumpkins and costume parties, mostly because I really believe there are forces of good and evil that work in this world.
I saw it in full force when my mom owned a popular tea room & gift shop and had a tea leaf/palm reader come in a few times a week. When I was 16, I had my tea leaves read by James, a complete phony whose predictions made me laugh and I wrote off psychics completely.
But we weren't laughing a few years later with Aziza.
Aziza (whose real name was Bernice--BWHAHAAHA) was a popular tea leaf reader and she had a huge following. Wealthy women would spend a lot of money on her counsel and they lied to their husbands they were going for therapy. For them, Aziza was therapeutic.
I liked Aziza. She was the first palmist we'd had who wasn't a complete freak but I did not give credence to what she did until one day, a large sum of money went missing. When my brothers and I were in college, my mom would buy back American money from the shop's American patrons (the exchange rate was a lot higher at the bank). She stashed it in the house and would frequently send us American money.
One day, she went to the hiding place to get some money and it was gone. She and my father were the only people who knew of the secret stash and she was devastated. She went into work that day and Aziza, sensing something was wrong, insisted my mom sit down for a tea leaf reading.
My mom did not tell her anything but Aziza saw something. Two men, one of whom my parents knew. She saw these men come into my parent's home to do some work. She saw their vehicle. She saw the friend leave and the stranger stay. She saw the stranger take something valuable.
My mom was incredulous. She had forgotten that several months prior she had hired a friend to work on our house and he had brought another contractor with him. And Aziza nailed everything--the friend, the vehicle, the location of the theft.
The money was never recovered. I mean really, what kind of evidence did they have in court: "My psychic told me you did it." Maybe on TV but not in real life. :-)
So, my question to you is do you believe in psychics, ghosts or spirits? Or do you think they are just a product of an overactive imagination?

Wow, is that comment ahead of me a spam? Looks like it. Anyway ---
I don't really believe in psychics or ghosts. I believe in spirits, good and evil. In high school I played ouija board with some friends and we had a creepy experience and I never played again. So I'm sure the intent of manufacturing the game is for fun, and what the heck I let my kids read and watch Harry Potter, and Vampire movies, but I don't want a ouija board in my house becasue of my experience.
I think the dark spirits of Bloggersville are promoting their blog on your blog .... (see comment #1). So um, yeah, I guess that makes me a believer!
Actually, like with everything, I believe there is a relative amount of truth to it. We humans are very good and conjuring up (pardon the pun) stories and experiences that really are out of this world (again, a pun) and are full of baloney! But in essence, I believe that there are spirits and ghosts and depending on what you focus your energies on will be what you experience. For that reason I would not want my children "experimenting" with any games or activities that would promote dark things in their lives. There is enough darkness in this world, I don't need or want my kids seeking after it. REally, what good comes of it besides curbing a curiosity? Not needed for happiness and the universe's mysteries will all be answered in due time. Right now, I"ve got Halloween costumes to worry about!
And I think it is ridiculous that they would target a game like that for that age group
Evil is real, and even though sometimes we think of evil as not having any real power, we would be wrong to think it doesn't. And because evil is real and has power, that is precisely why we shouldn't "play games" with it. Ouija boards is a game, right? But it's a game with the intent to play with evil.
As a "believier" like yourself, I know that good is more powerful than evil. But only when we are in posession of goodness --like making good decisions. Thus the problem when it comes to flirting with evil --by choice. I have no doubt your mom's tea leaf palm reader person was exactly right, because the Dark Arts do have power. But is that the kind of power one should be obsessed with? 8 year old children should be playing with?
Heck no! (or in this case, it would be "hell")
I am not a fan of the Ouija board and would never purchase it for my kids - or purchase it in general. I don't believe in any sort of hauntings or spirits related to it, but it is just principle in general.
I'm not sure what I think of psychics. I would probably have to have personal experiences that were real and true to become a believer... it seems so "out there" to me.
Like the others I believe in evil spirits and good spirits. Physics and other things like that I think are just part of the power of us wanting to believe.
As a teenager my girlfriends and I used to play with a Quija board--I would never buy one for my kids.
I do not believe in psychics.
Like you, I prefer to focus on the pumpkins and costumes when it comes to Halloween--actually I really prefer to focus on THE CANDY!!!
If you believe in spiritual gifts, one gift is the gift of prophesy. I think there are people who have it. But I don't think it's given to them to play games with.
I don't really believe in most ghost stories or most psychic phenomenon. But I do think that there are things in this world we don't understand.
I would never in a million years buy such a product and I have talked to my children about what they are. There are good things in this world that need to be cultivated, and there are bad/dark things in this world which most certainly do not.
I just saw that Ouija board at Toys R Us and was as angry as you are. I think it is HORRIBLE they are making that evil game look like something little girls should play with. Speaking from personal experience, that game is bad news and shouldn't even be sold in a toy store.
I believe I don't know half what goes on un this crazy world of ours and I understand even less. To have a firm opinion about such things would seem really arrogant to me.
Ouija board though? Never darkening my door.
I would never buy a Ouija board for a kid. I, like you, think that there are spirits at work in our world and I don't want to invite any to be around.
Just say No to Ouiji boards!
I do believe there are spirits around us. I've never had any experiences, but I believe there are people who do.
Wow - so interesting that you would post this today..........I had the very same thought when I opened the catalog and saw the bubble-gum pink Ouija!
I couldn't believe it........
I don't always know what I think either - but why toy with something that promotes darkness? There is enough of it in the world as it is.
And I hate that it targets young girls - it's positively creepy.
Ditto on the costumes, candy, pumpkins and giggles......It's all in good fun at our house.
Enjoy yours!!
Yes, yes, yes. Phychics, energy workers, vibrations, aura, chakras. You got me--the whole kit n caboodle! The ouiji board should remain something "black" that you sneak out of your parents' closet for late night truth or dare parties--not something pink and totally accessible. And as a Christmas gift? Totally wrong.
I believe in ghosts and I believe that there are special people in this world that have been given the gift of sight, touch (healing) and such. However, sadly, greed has capitolized on these gifts and have sadly taken them away. You just never know who has the true talent or not. And for the most part, most people claiming to have them don't.
Do I believe in Ouija boards? Not really, but that is because I am too chicken to actually try. My imagination is active enough, especially when I was younger, and I would hate to see anything come true out of it. Again though, large companies will capitolize on pretty much anything that will make them a buck or two. It is tacky to see a pink Ouija board but to each it's own.
Ahhh, the tools of marketing. Pink makes everything alright, I guess.
I'm a believer, in the sense that I haven't ruled anything out like psychics, ghosts and stuff. But I'm not a "seek it out" sort of believer.
I agree with not promoting darkness, and ouija boards won't be in my house.
Interesting post! I love seeing everyone's point of view!
Personally, I wouldn't buy one for my daughter, because I don't have any interest in them, but I don't see them as evil. I know others disagree with me, and that's fine. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. I don't judge others on their beliefs in this matter, and I trust that others will treat my opinion with the same respect. Pen & Teller did an interesting show on the Ouija Board which brought out how the people playing the game are moving the planchette, whether it be consciously or subconsciously.
I think objects have the power you give them. I know that those who believe in The Dark Arts do so with great intensity (whether they believe *in them* or believe they exist). I know that those who don't believe in them, are just as set.
If your religion calls for you to avoid such things, you have to do what you feel is right. My beliefs don't hinder such things, so something like this isn't even usually on my radar.
I, personally, think there is a scientific explanation for everything...and just because we don't know why or how something "works" doesn't make it "evil."
But, that's just me.
All this being said, Ouija Boards *are* controversial, so I'm surprised that Toys R Us is promoting them...
I was shocked to see it in the Big Book this year! HELL NO I would NEVER EVER buy that game...and I am saddened that the world has come to a place where it seems acceptable to some to promote a game like that to young children.
For me, I do believe that evil is real. I think of Halloween as a celebration of imagination. It is a holiday where we can be anything we want to be. I hope to dissuade my kids from dressing up as anything evil or dark.
Here's hoping that no one buys the pink Ouija board and they loose their tails on it, so we don't have to see in it next years Big Book!
first of all, let me say that i wouldn't let my kids - at any age - play with a ouija board... for the same reasons you listed.
second, i guess i do believe there are people out there that have powers beyond the normal. but i think they are few and far between. there are far more quacks out there posing as psychics, healers, whatever.
I don't believe in psychics. I do believe in The Holy Ghost, and I do believe in Spirits - it is kind of complex so I won't get into but yeah, I think there are good and bad spirits out there.
I would NOT buy a Ouija board for my kids - at any age!! That is NUTS that Toys 'R Us has it even listed to buy!
When you are born and raised in a country like mine, you end up believing in a lot of things. I do believe in the Good and Evil, energies and so on.
Yes, I am a believer, but I don´t like the idea of submitting this kind of things to young children. I think it is worth wait for them to have their own judgement.
Fabiola
I certainly do believe which is also why I would never buy a Ouija. Perhaps they are a bunch of hooey but why take that chance? You have to be careful to avoid opening the door to something you might not be able to handle.
Sure there are spirits out there, but not all of them are GOOD, so why mess with them. I think it is crazy to market a ouija board to kids!
Okay, so my religion teaches me that it's impossible, however, I have a tendency to blur lines as far as most of my beliefs are concerned, so this is no different. I won't use them. I don't want to invite anyone unwanted in to my life, my home, my world. Why tempt fate?
I am writing this before I read the other comments--I would never, under any circumstances, buy a Oiuja board for my child or let them even go where there was one, nor would I ever mess with them. There are definitely evil powers at work in this world--and they do have power--it's not to be messed with. I know people think it's all in fun, but there is definite direction in the Bible against mediums, etc, and I use that as my guideline.
I hope Toys R Us gets a ton of emails complaining about the pink-marketed box. They've been selling Ouija for decades in their store, but I think people are going to pay attention to it now that it appears so "cute & innocent." Shame on them.
Yes, I believe in paranormal phenomena. There are people who do have extra-sensory perceptions and one of the things I'd love answered after I die is why and how this works....but there are liars out there, too. I think there are people who use it for good & their gifts aren't satanic. I also think there are people who get powers from the devil because they use them to do evil. But I do believe every single one of us on the earth has the ability to trust in our feelings (spiritual, conscience, gut instinct, guardian angel, however you want to describe it) which can help guide us or protect us and if we open up to & follow these impressions then we will benefit from them and experience more of them. If we ignore them then they'll eventually go away. Suffice it to say that I've had many interesting "other-worldly" experiences (cue the Twilight Zone music...cuz I'm talkin' 'bout non-religious predictions--it's like I just "know" something that's going to happen and it does...and that's really, really weird...I even tried to talk to my clergy about it when I was a teen because I'd been experiencing this since I was a child.....)!
Oh, and I just wanted to mention that you're going to say....... (just kidding!!!!!!)
I don't even have kids, but I wouldn't give a child a Ouija board.
And I do think there are people like Aziza who are "attuned." I don't know what they're attuned to, but seem to know things most people don't.
I am definitely a believer in the paranormal and supernatural world. I think that everyone has intuition but the degree to which they use it and actually listen to it varies greatly. Just like with anything, there are phonies out there to beware of.
As far as Ouija boards are concerned...I've never touched one and they still give me the creeps. I have a few friends that have taken intuitive/psychic mentoring classes, and even those classes do not encourage the Ouija board. They do "play" with tarot cards and pendulums claiming that these tools come from "Love & Light". And, in my opinion, those "toys" seem much milder than the infamous Ouija.
Anyway - I guess the whole idea of summoning up spirits at random is just too risky for me. Chalk it up to the great fear of the unknown!
I think psychics have a talent/ gift, but that most of them are fakes. Anything can be used for good or bad and I don't think it is always an evil thing. I would definitely not buy an Ouija board for anyone especially a child though.
I believe what my mom told me when I first asked her about the ouija board. She said that it is a lot of phony bologna if you want it to be, but if you take it seriously and really ask evil spirits to help you, they will, but then you get evil results. Evil only works if you ask it to/let it. I do believe that.
P.S. PINK? Pink ouija? Seriously? GAG!
I have a friend who has these vivid, clear, dreams that often come true. For example, the NIGHT before I was going to call her and tell her I was pregnant with Kiddo, she had a dream that I called her and told her I was pregnant.
So, yes, I do think that some people do possess some sort of extra-sensory perception, but to be honest, I'm a little afraid of it.
No, I don't believe in the supernatural ~ as there's absolutely no proof whatsoever to back it up. This toy is more of a joke than anything else, and If we're so worried about our kids "contacting spirits," maybe we should ban alien-themed toys from them, too.
That Ouija board is completely outrageous.
Yes, I do belive in the supernatural. I've experienced it firsthand because my mom has had weird crap follow her her entire life. Know why? Because my mom and her friends played with Ouija boards all the time as kids and likely unwittingly unleashed something that's attached to her even to this day.
I'm completely serious about this.
She has "things" that pinch her during the night and bruises her. She's been a sleepwalker since her teenage years. I always thought our house was haunted but now I realize it had something to do with my mom. She can't wear watches because the battery shorts out within hours. Her microwave and washing machine flash weird numbers and she gets mysterious untraceable calls to her cell phone all the time. Oh, and spirits constantly bother my Down Syndrome brother to the point that he tells them to go in the closet and leave him alone that he's tired of talking to them.
Ouija boards are BAD BAD BAD, people. I can't stress that enough.
It was Halloween night 1977. Three of us were praying in the living room; specifically praying against witchcraft. While we were praying the large bush outside the window began to shake violently, lasting about 15 seconds – which is a long, long time when startled. We amped up the praying! A few minutes later, we could sense a “presence” enter the room. For about a half a minute, the rocking chair across the room rocked - back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The praying took a dose of steroids!
You want to know if I believe?
Wow... I usually step away from controversy when it comes to my responses or to my blog posts, however... this one I am going to have to jump off my lily pad because I'm feeling a bit froggy.
Come on folks... the hypocrisy of believing in ONE type of spirit and denouncing the other? Really?
Without light you can not have dark... they don't exist as solitary entities because we would have no reference point to come from.
I think all things have the energy to be used to speak with spirits, it is how we use it that matters. I do not teach my children that Ouija boards are bad. Because of that, they have never had an issue, or questions about them.
What makes you think that people only use them for "evil" spirit conversations? Is it because it's been made foreboding by us?
Perhaps because it is a rebellious thing to lash out against our staunch ideals and they want to see what "games" they can play.
Whatever the reason, I agree not having them in the home if you are uncomfortable with the idea. There are many items of spiritual paraphernalia I don't put in my home, because it makes me uncomfortable.
Teach your children about the dangers of playing with "knives" physical or spiritual.. they are dangerous.
As for Toys R'Us selling them... Meh... they sell wrestling dolls and kids die every year from doing wrestling moves on each other. When will we start boycotting those?
Shannon I agree with you. I am a mother of two. 25 years old and I used the ouija board at 18 and it messed my life up really bad. DO NOT BUY ONE.
After all if I was an evil spirit I guess my biggest trick and accomplishment would be knowing I have decieved people to believe I do not exist or am simply harmless.
Talking to spirits is the worst thing I have ever done. There is nothing light and pink about it. It may seem 'fun' at first but you are opening doors to the spirit world that you sometimes CANNOT shut. They will EVENTUALLY show thier true colors.
I would NEVER EVER expose my children to dabble with this.
It doesnt matter what you believe. That doesnt make it any less real. They are either real or they are not....
Please learn from somone elses misery and regret..they are real and they are there!
