Possibly the biggest understatement made by fundraising kid as she looked at our 755-lbs pumpkin, Halloween countdown sign and abundance of decorations: "So, do you celebrate Halloween?"
Halloween isn't all we celebrate. Every Monday evening we good Mormon folk gather our little flock together for Family Home Evening. For those not in the know, the official definition is:
Family home evening is a special time set aside each week that brings family members together and strengthens their love for each other, helps them draw closer to Heavenly Father, and encourages them to live righteously. The Johnson Family definition:
Family home evening is aspecialharrowing time set aside each week that brings family memberstogetherat odds with each other and strengthenstheir lovetheir resolve to throw tantrums thereby needing to encourage them to live righteously [by not hitting one another].
Or something like that.
In an ideal world, we would all gather together, link arms and sing Kumbaya. Sometimes it happens that way, many times it doesn't. The reason? We have two small children who do not always like each other. So in FHE, we try to appease the sibling rivalry and sing a song, say a nice prayer, have an uplifting lesson and then a fun activity.
Most of the time.
Unless Jamie is in charge.
It was his turn last night. A few minutes prior, I asked him what he had planned.
"We are going to watch the Broncos together!" he announced gleefully.
Trying to be the supportive wife, I answered, "That's fine. We'll come down and watch with you. Though that in itself doesn't seem like a very appropriate Family Home Evening activity.
"Don't worry. We'll start the game with a prayer."

LOL! Trust a man to justify using sports as a FHE! I wouldn't be suprised if the kids behaved better than the P. L. in the home.
Hey - if there is popcorn or treats during - that's what really counts, right? Right?? Right?? =)
I wish my dad would have planned those kind of FHEs. I just remember the teenage years where we spent a lot of time rolling our eyes. :)
Sounds like a great evening Amber! Hope you survived...with lots of prayer! Happy Day!
If I liked football - I'd be so there.
The man gave leadership and was spiritual. What more do you want?
My parents used to call family prayers family fights. Inevitably we would start fighting the second that prayer time was announced.
Suddenly, I'm feeling comforted. :-)
"We'll start the game with a prayer."
Didn't work.
My husband prayed for the Red Sox right before the game started...that didn't work either.
Sometimes its more about trying to teach a priority than getting a spiritual experience.
Hey if we can count driving to Dairy Queen, I think you can count hanging out together watching a game. Was there actually family interaction involved?
Family? Check
Home? Check
Evening? Check
Sounds like FHE to me!
Too bad your prayers didn't help out the Broncos last night.
KEEP BELIEVING
I love your keeping it real definition of FHE. That's how ours go. The "lesson" ends up being about a sentence long, and then we sing a song. How do the kids like the Broncos?
Sounds like a plan to me! It's better than what we did... a friend from high school is coming for dinner tomorrow and my parents will be here this weekend. I made my family clean the house!!! Oh yeah... ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
Glad you liked the dish towel :)
In our home, I'm the only sports fan. The Broncos were so awful that I quit watching before halftime.
You just described my husbands dream family home evening if you take the Broncos and replace them with the Raiders.
Hilarious on many levels ;)
Yeah...Our FHE reminds me of why someone coined the phrase, "Family Home Evening...the only fight that begins and ends with a prayer."
Sounds better and a lot more fun than ours a couple of weeks ago... we cleaned the play room, that leaks into the family room. By the time it was over I was so frazzled it was bedtime. :)
This is too funny. lol
Reminds of the time I was on vacation, visiting a pueblo in New Mexico, and our tour guide mentioned that the guys go down in the kiva and watch football.
Yeah, I would need to start the evening with prayer if I had to watch Monday night football, too. :o) You guys are so funny!
At least a prayer was involved. If we sit down and eat dinner together on Monday we count it as FHE. I have new respect for Sunbeam teachers every Monday night. I only have to try to entertain 3 kids for 15 minutes. She has 8 kids for 2 hours!
That is too funny. Sounds like something my husband would try.
Most FHE for us are spent trying to keep our kids in the room. My son thinks FHE is time to run around in circles, yelling and laughing and my daughter of course has to imitate him. Good times! :-)
So do the kids like watching football? I think that is cute! We do a lot of Mario Kart FHE's.
We went to the library for FHE. Real original.
what did you pray for? because it didn't help the broncos one little bit. we should have all said a prayer that night =)
"Family home evening is a special harrowing time set aside each week that brings family members together at odds with each other and strengthens their love their resolve to throw tantrums thereby needing to encourage them to live righteously [by not hitting one another]."
That about sums it up....
Whatever works ; )
(And you know the Broncos don't play every FHE and we really aren't supposed to watch them on Sunday, so why not Monday ; )
