In just a few weeks, my beloved James and I will celebrate our six-year anniversary. We have certainly had our fair share of crazy moments but the one that has kept me up at nights in a stupor of thought occurred shortly after we were married. You see, Jamie and I spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica. Ma honey did an impeccable job planning our entire trip. We started at the Magellan Inn in Cahuita. With its deserted beaches on the Caribbean ocean and gorgeous grounds, this was the perfect newlywed spot.
Well, if it weren't for the "chastity" beds they had pushed together instead of just springing for a queen-sized bed.
Well, if it weren't for the "chastity" beds they had pushed together instead of just springing for a queen-sized bed.
From there, it was onto Poas Volcano Lodge where we scaled volcanos and hiked through La Paz Butterfly Gardens. Oh, and I fell in love with plantains and a roadside stand's creme de leche, those two things alone accounted for my 30-lbs weight gain during our honeymoon.

Half-way into our trip, we were supposed to spend a night camping in the rain forest but had to cancel when Jamie hit a purple and pink bus that caused a huge traffic jam in downtown San Jose.
But I'm not allowed to talk about that.
Now, onto the mystery. The last area we stayed was Tabacan, a five-star resort located at the base of Arenal Volcano in Northern Costa Rica. Tabacan had 12 natural thermal hot springs, with grounds that were littered with lagoons and waterfalls. From our private porch, we could watch the lava flowing from the volcano. Bottom line: it was surreal and gorgeous.
We immediately reported the theft to the manager. He asked if housekeeping had come by and we responded affirmatively. We were on our way to dinner and he said he would look into it. A couple of hours later, he appeared at out table. He showed us the room report of all the key swipes:
1) The maid
2) Us
3) Manager
4) Manager
He said he had talked to housekeeping and they denied the charge. He then defended them, saying they had been at the resort a long time and they have never had any problems. He left and we resolved to go to the police the next morning.
Until we went back to our room. There, very strategically placed behind two glasses in the bathroom, were our rings. They were obviously planted there when we were at dinner.
So, Super Sleuths, what sayest ye? Who done it and was the manager in on the crime? Have you ever had anything stolen from a hotel?

Oh that is creepy and it would totally keep me up at night. I can't solve your mystery, I have never had anything stolen but I can sure feel the pain in this one. Glad you got your rings back though, what a disaster that would have been.
The only thing stolen from me at a hotel was my virginity. (On my honeymoon of course!)
You know, I in constant awe with you. You and I are complete and total opposites in terms of adventure. I would rather read about yours than ever live them and I am sure you would rather laugh at mine than, well sit home with me.
However, in my older years I am getting braver and braver. I have even committed to Joe that someday I will get a passport because I would like to visit lovely places some day with him - some day when the kids are older. Yet now that I know you, I have decided to bag Joe and just take you along. I think you would be just the right kind of person to take on a vacation: full of fun and my kind of adventure -mysteries. But you will NOT get me on a hike....
It was totally the maid and she fessed up when the manager approached her... why do you think there was the second swipe by the manager. He had to return the hot rings. It looks like a beautiful resort though. I think I might want to go to Costa Rica next. As long as I keep my rings on my fingers.
What a great honeymoon! And of course... it wouldn't be you and Jamie without all the mishaps and excitement! :)
Crazy ring story!! I've never had anything stolen - I always worry about it and try to be careful though.
Yes, it was the maid. And the manager returned the rings, only beacuse you mentioned the Policia!
I'm in awe of your honeymoon --I've always wanted to go to Costa Rica, and now you've made that desire more intent!
P.S. I've never had anything stolen in a hotel room before, but then again, I've never stayed at a hotel in a third world (or second world?) country. If I had, I'm sure I'd be careful (desperate times call for desperate measures and all that...)
I am seriously paranoid about that so I always take anything that I don't want possibly stolen with me when I leave the room.
We have not had anything stolen from my room at a hotel but we did have our car broken into at a hotel. The jerkwads stole some irreplaceable pictures and the book I was reading. I am sure they made a mint fencing them.
I really can not believe that. Its not like the rings were on the sink and they happened to see them and took them (which is bad as well) but they went through your things. That would creep me out knowing all of my stuff and been looked through. I would have been so angry. I hope you gave it to them after you found your rings!
Since I travel way too much, I ALWAYS use the safety box because I am PARANOID about this.

That's just too suspicious... the manager had to be in on the scam.
It's scary too, I also do the "hide the ring in the bottom of the makeup bag" trick. Perhaps I need to rethink my strategy.
Your honeymoon sounds awesome... I spent 3 days in Zion National Park and then rushed back to work because I had a deadline! :-)
I'm like Awesome Mom--I always take everything with me. On my last trip that meant lugging around two cameras and two laptops. My husband will leave his laptop in the room and so far nothing has happened.
I've never had anything stolen in a hotel room, but once I did leave a couple of bras at a hotel in Grand Junction, and when I called about them they were nowhere to be found. I know one of the maids took them, but then I did leave them there.
Love the story--love Costa Rica.
It sounds a little fishy to me, but I have no answers, and I watch CSI EVERY WEEK!!!!
Thankfully, I've never had anything stolen.
How in the world did they find them in your makeup bag in the first place? Either they have cameras in the room, or searched through EVERYTHING to find them! Creepy!
I just read your "he's just not that into you" story. I posted one of my own at fitmepink a few days ago. Praise the heavens I am not in the horrible dating scene anymore!
You would think they would do better and put it back were they found it but the creepier question is everytime they clean the room did they go through everything? Note to self don't bring anything valuable on vaction!! I think the manager probably threatened them and thats why the rings were put back and 'smoothed' things over with you for PR sake.
It was the Maid! With the Rings! In the Bathroom! The manager was totally in on it. (I know this because I play Clue.)
At least you got them back though. I wonder if maids routinely search through make-up bags? I leave my ring at home when I travel, and wear a cheap and convenient band.
I would say the maid... and I would guess that the manager helped cover it up so that the cops wouldn't be involved.
And yes - I have had something stolen from a hotel room. But it was stolen by one of the gals I was sharing the room with. It was just a pair of earrings, but I loved those things. I asked her about the earrings and she told me she had owned them for a long time... sigh.
My husband would say it was a ghost - someone trying to tell you something. "Oooooo... Doooon't take off your riiiings ever agaaaaaain..."
I say the maid.
Oh no!! Thank goodness they were returned! I definitely think someone with the maid's card took them, and the manager returned them.
Either that or the Great Pumpkin was involved... ;)
Sigh. You take the best vacations of anybody I know. Butterfly forests and lava? Secluded exotic retreats? Wow.
I've "lost" a few things in hotels, but nothing worth a lot of money like a wedding ring.
oh my gosh, that is terrible. i say the manager was totally in on it and threatened their jobs if they didn't return the rings. duh.
i am still giggling about the chastity beds on your honeymoon. that doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for some serious honeymooning.
We've had hotels MAIL us things after we left. Once we left a baby toy at our hotel at Disneyworld, and they mailed it to us. Another time we stayed in Nauvoo, and left some clothes in the bottom drawer of the dresser. They weren't even clean clothes. And they mailed them to us. That's about the opposite of stealing your stuff, wouldn't you say?
Costa Rica looked great. It is on my list of places that I want to go. Feel that we need to wait until Harley is more active.
It was the maid, but an awful story. I would have made me want to immediately leave that hotel.
We all know to be careful, but you don't expect or imagine that people will be riffling through your things while your out.
What an AWESOME honeymoon! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...
I can't believe they stole your rings! So glad you got them back - good thing you said something!! I would guess the maid - but manager put them back.
Almost more violating is that they rifled through your things ~ *shiver*
Nothing stolen from a hotel room - but DH traveled with best man to vegas 4 months after our wedding for golf. His clubs stolen from the car when they were at dinner. He calls to tell me so........then divulges that his fresh from the honeymoon wedding band was in the bag (not used to golfing with a ring).
He has learned to golf wearing a wedding band.
Never leave anything in you rroom, right?
Glad you got them back, even if they WERE Stolen temporarily.
The maid did it, in the bedroom, with sticky fingers.
It was Colonel Mustard in the dining room with a candlestick.
At least you got them back. Can you imagine..sheesh.
Wow. Glad you got them back!! That could have sucked.
We went on our honeymoon to Costa Rica as well. But I didn't wear my new wedding ring--just a cheap knock off. I'm slightly paranoid.
doesn't it creep you out to know someone was going through your stuff. and they had to be searching pretty intently to look in the bottom of your make up bag.
i, too, think it was the maid and she fessed up to the manager (probably was threatened termination) and he returned it.
Beautiful. One day I want to go there. But I'll watch out for the maid and manager.
I say they both were partners in the little deal.
Your honeymoon sounds so fun (minus the car wreck) and I'm so glad you got your rings back, no matter who took them.
I've never had anything stolen but often wonder if the maids ever keep the bottles of bubble bath I end up leaving behind at every hotel I go to.
I wonder about the two entrances by the manager. Very suspicious, if you ask me.
That is hilarious...well sad but funny that they thought you wouldn't notice?
I think it was the manager. But what do I know? I've never won a round of clue in my entire life.
Glad you got your rings back. And happy 6th! We just had ours a few weeks ago which means we got married in the same year. Yea! Does that make us BFF?
(sorry, it's late and I should just go to bed. instead I keep leaving really dumb comments on people's blogs. I'll probably regret it in the morning. Or maybe not.)
Manager was totally IN on it. I wonder if they were watching you all or just randomly searching your room every time you left! Eeek! I don't know if I could have slept that night. Also, the key swipe report? Um ... I guess he was too stupid to realize he was sort of incriminating himself?
Congrats on 6 years!
