To build up Hurricane Hadley's confidence, I often pretend to be dumber than I am and marvel when she gets the correct answer. This strategy has backfired lately because she is now convinced I am stupid.
Hadley: I am smarter than you, Mommy.
Me: [Backpeddling] I don't think so, dear.
Hadley: Well, I am.
Me: Oh yeah? What is 4 + 2?
Hadley: [Silence. Insert crickets chirping]
Me: Touché, my dear.

Oh, that was too hard a question!!
Oh I so played the dumb card for a long time...it will always backfire...especially when you have an exceptionally bright child who honestly probably is smarter than you on some level
What I love about this is that I can just hear the tone so perfectly. Because I use it all day:)
Ooo you showed her!!!
Love this story!! Got to set them strait while you still can because there will be a few years were they will believe that and then they will come back around.
Ha,ha, cute! :)
Ha...too funny!
Hey - you do what you goota do to keep the pecking order in line...
So you ARE smarter than a four year old :)
FUNNY! Way to show her ;)
so what's the answer...
Well- you are at least smarter than her for a little while. I always marveled at my children asking me a question and then telling me that the answer I gave was wrong- I mean, if they think I am stupid, why ask in the first place.
Good luck- and start spelling yor answers- you will be shocked at how quickly she will learn to spell.
So hilarious, this made me laugh out loud! I can see myself doing something similar.
It made me laugh!!! I love it.
Fabiola
LOL, sometimes we have to remind them who the queen is. Step off little girl.
You totally just rocked her world with that one! Hee Hee!
My kids think I am really dumb, too. I laughed at this...I needed a good laugh. Thanks :)
Good one :)
I admit that I have done similar things... although, I'll ask questions that they don't have any idea what the answer is... and I don't either. When they ask me what the answer is I tell them to figure it out :)
I have a gift for you on my blog!
Too funny! I have a miss smarty pants in my house as well. And a two year old learning the ropes quite well from big sis!
*giggle*
We want them to be brilliant - but not so brilliant that we are stripped of parental dignity!
I love it~
:)
Too cute--love the picture.
So cute! I love the picture. I don't see enough pictures of your ADORABLE kids.
Just wait until she asks for help with her algebra and all you can do is give her a blank stare.
Oh Amber, I do so love you, but you clearly are not an elementary teacher. The correct response for this question is...4 plus 2 what? And while they stand there dumbfounded that you actually asked that inane of a question of them, you run and get distracted doing something else.
I am constantly playing the question/answer game with my kiddos. Seriously. Sometimes it drives me crazy answering all the questions to answers...ya know? Maybe I need to start playing dumb every once in awhile!
See this is why I work in schools at LEAST a grade ahead of mine. So when he's talking about the periodic table and atom vs ion equations, I know exactly what he's talking about. (lololol)
Oy. Honestly, I haven't been able to answer his questions for years. Jake's were never easy like "Why is the sky blue?" they were more "What is the composition of air?"
Enjoy!
My husband plays dumb with our son all the time. I know it's already starting to catch up with my husband, though. I was with Fly in his room when JP passed the room and walked down the hall. Fly looked up and said, "Dad is silly," then went right back to playing.
You should have asked her about the air-speed velocity of laden swallows.
You ARE smarter than a 4 year old.
And quick too!
