Mom blogs as promotional vehicles--yes or no?

So, we're sick. Again. And it is coming out at both ends. This time, I blame Bode. We have been in Park City and Salt Lake City the past week and he was likely exposed to The Plague when we left him in childcare while the rest of us hit the slopes.

It is is his version of payback.

Oh, and my laptop died. And I got slammed into by a snowboarder. And then we got locked out on the deck whilst in the hot tub.

Despite all of this, it was one of our favorite trips ever. Minus the aforementioned incidents. Details to come when I can drag myself out of bed and try to convince Jamie to get off his pumpkin discussion boards to let me use his computer.

============================================

On another note, when I was at BlogHer last summer I attended a session with a large number of publicists and mommy bloggers. The jist of it was really popular bloggers whined about the terrible PR pitches they often received and the publicists pretended to care, while in reality they drew pictures of bullseyes with the blogger's head in the middle.

It was a veritable lovefest.

After the session, a lesser-known blogger asked me, "What about the rest of us who want to receive those crummy pitches about products to review or give away on our blog?"

She had a great point. I personally have chosen not to monetize this blog or do promotional giveaways and I reserve that for Mile High Mamas. However, I know there are many of you who want to be on the cutting edge of new product releases and here's one way to do it: sign up for One2One Network, an effective word-of-mouth network that allows you to sample products, take surveys, throw in-home parties and do giveaways/reviews on your blog.

I received my first product last week: the soundtrack to He's Just Not That Into You. I have been promoting the movie's pre-screening on Mile High Mamas so had high hopes for the soundtrack.

My rating: Jamie hates it and I'd give it about a B-.

The soundtrack has some 80s tunes that I never cared for back in the 80s. However, it does have some redeeming tracks from Maroon 5, The Cure and r.e.m. It's all about taste and while it's not my favorite, I wouldn't negate others from enjoying it. I highly suspect once I see the movie, the songs will come to life, as is the case with most soundtracks.

The movie soundtrack came in a package with some nifty promotional candy hearts with sentimental sayings.

Or so I thought.

A few days later, Hadley and I were making a birthday card for a neighbor and I had the brilliant idea to glue some of them onto the card.

Until we started reading them:

Back off.

Let's talk.

Whatever.

I'm done.

Best to save those sweet nothings for the next time I have a whole lot of something to say to someone less-than-sweet.

Now, for the good stuff. Leave a comment and you'll be entered to win a copy of the He's Just Not That Into You soundtrack to check it out for yourself. And finally, do you ever do giveaways on your blog? Do you sell ads? Why or why not?

Hey Girl!! I'm finally out of my hole long enough to catch up on my fav blogs.. good thing I get to leave the house for work! LOL!

Isn't if funny how all the crummy songs from the 80's are now "classics" and getting air time again? Gag me with a spoon!

Tee aka The Diva's Thoughts said...

Oh my goodness. Those candy sayings are priceless. lol

I don't do giveaways because I don't think my readers would care actually.

That is hilarious! Now you just get to eat them!

I have never done a giveaway on my blog or sold ads, because honestly not that many people read it. So what's the point?

I'm sorry you're not feeling well :S Can't wait to hear about your adventures in Park City though!
I did do a giveaway at one point. It was a lot of fun. And I do have the BlogHer ads on my blog because at one time I had fairly good traffic. But it isn't as high as it once was. I'm not sure why I still even have the ads on there...

Hmm...you think Manny can bring me some mula?
I think doing giveaways might be kinda cool.

I stopped doing it when I got like three offers to promote Febreeze in a row. I mean the product does have it's place and has worked pretty ok for me but I don't want to obsess over it on my blog especially when I do not use it all that often. I have had some other promotional offers but really they were for things that I would never use so I would not want to tell my readers how good they were.

I have BlogHer ads... not sure why, except that every now and then I get a little money that can go toward some charitable contribution. I think that's all I've done with the money from that over the past year.

I do giveaways on my running blog. Nobody's ever asked about doing a giveaway on my regular blog, probably because it's so random and rambling.

Ah, that's where they get all the stuff! Thanks for the tip.

I am torn, I do contests ... it's usually my own stuff (I buy it). I've done a few reviews.

It's not really what I want my blog to be about, but it is a REALLY slippery slope.

I hope you feel better soon.

I hope you guys are feeling better soon!!

I have Google Ads and also BlogHer ads on my site. I have done reviews, but I have yet to do any giveaways. I am also signed up to do paid reviews for BlogHer (and have a non-ad review page all ready to go for those), but I have yet to be assigned one of those yet.

I love writing, and I love connecting with the people who read my blog (and with those who write the blogs that I read). The ads I have are pretty non-obtrusive and go to support my blogging addiction. ;)

I'll have to check out that site!

As for those candies...one of my friends got a box and gave them to her 11-yr old daughter...before she realized they were *ahem* inappropriate *cough* for an 11-yr old! Ooops! :)

You do have all the luck! Hope you feel better soon.
No ads, a contest or two (mostly my "real life" friends enter though), and no giveaways on my blog.
I'm a really small family blog though. If I got hundreds of hits I might consider ads. No. On second thought I don't think I would do ads on my family blog even if it were ragingly popular. I'd like to use my blog more as a vehicle to gain some more freelance opportunities and earn more money that way, rather than through ads.
By the way, I love your set up. I think it's perfect. Mile High Mamas for promo stuff and Crazy Bloggin Canuck for fun writing family stuff. Although, I don't mean to insult Mile High Mamas, I have seen some great writing of yours there too.

Sorry you all have been sick--no fun. But glad your trip was good in spite of the sickness.

No, I don't do ads--not enough traffic.

I'm really excited to see that movie...and I'm intrigued by the candy hearts. How funny!

I don't do ads on my family blog, and "try" on my fitness one. I'm going to check out that site!

Kari said...

The real issue is, were the hearts chocolate? hee hee! And just catching up on your blog - getting your green card (or whatever it is sounds like kind of a hassle to redo all the time). If it were me, I'd get my US Citizenship just to avoid the paperwork once and for all! :)

I haven't done it because no one has offered, well except for a couple of book reviews.

I would happily sell ads for my blog or get free stuff to review. Anything to help out with finances around here, as long as I can be honest about the product.

i really wanted to see that movie and was planning on going on friday night with my girlfriends, but my cousin beat me to it and said it wasn't that great. bummer! and bummer on those candy hearts. not very lovey dovey, huh?

I do an occasional giveaway, but they are not sponsored. I signed up for the one2One network but haven't heard anything from them in a long time. Perhaps they didn't like the giveaway I did. I don't know.

I'm sorry you are sick. Yes, you probably caught the bug in Utah, since ALL of Utah is sick right now. At least my whole family has had it, and we're hoping that we're done with the sickness now.

I wish you wellness, and I also hope I win.

I want to do giveaways on my blog but I am not popular enough and I dont want to force my home business on my blog. Try not to mix when I can help it. I want to do giveaways because personally I love them!! And it would be awesome to have the satisfaction of giving someone something they wouldn't get themselves.

Sorry you've been sick! Bummer!

Your vacations are always so... ummmm... adventurous? :) Without a doubt there is "fun" to be had. Or it may just be your misadventures are my highlights. :)

I don't sell ads, etc. I've done a giveaway - not to promote my blog - just because I felt like making a tutu. :)

You were totally in my neighborhood and you didn't even say hi? Wow, and I thought we were such good friends.

But seriously, I have about 2 readers so I'm pretty sure all my give aways would go to the same people over and over. So what would be the point, really? Plus I really just want to write about whatever I want to write about. So no, no ads or give aways on my little ol' blog.

Tonya said...

Bummer about the sickies but I'm glad you had a great trip. I don't have a popular enough blog to do giveaways or advertise. I'm alright with it because I don't have the time or energy it would take to promote it. My blog is simply a place for me to journal what's going on in our lives.

Scattered Mom said...

I hope you're all better soon! The sickies are making the rounds through town, but so far we haven't come down with it. (thanks to my nearly obsessive cleaning and hand washing)

I do receive free books and review them, but THAT is a gig that I love because I LOVE books! Plus then I donate them to local libraries, classrooms, etc.

Sponsored giveaways on my blog have mostly been companies saying "Thanks!" when I have promoted their products on Fabulicious Friday on my own. Sometimes I buy my own giveaway things, just for fun. Occasionally I promote a movie, or a charity group.

Like someone else said, I'd happily accept products and review them, but I'm honest. For ads, I would happily accept a few of them too, but I have specific criteria.

My Ice Cream Diary said...

I would sell adds, if I knew how. One of the highlights of my blogging experience was getting to sample free ice cream and giveaway free ice cream vouchers.

I love the idea of giveaways but am terrible at getting things in the mail so I'm thinking of grounding myself from ever doing another giveaway.

Is it just me, or have you been locked out of a hotel room before? (Maybe I'm getting my bloggers mixed up...)

I don't have any ads on my blog and I have done a few giveaways. It has to be a product I like or believe in, that's just my opinion.

But I do LOVE winning on everyone else's blog. Oh, have I mentioned I don't win much. LOL!

If you didn't choose a winner yet, I'd love to be entered! I've done one giveaway on my blog, but no ads and no plans for ads.
