My Reward for Surviving the Year of the Plague a.k.a. 2009

**EDITED**

This will be the summer of staycations! Our little foursome just got back from Boulder and will be hitting Colorado Springs/The Broadmoor, Steamboat Springs, the Crested Butte Music Festival, Devil's Thumb Ranch, YMCA of the Rockies and Beaver Creek.

It will be a veritable Tour de Colorado!

Something else I'm excited about is a trip I'm taking to the Olympic Peninsula. Without the kiddos. The area is the perfect family-friendly travel destination and I'll be delving into a plethora of activities that includes a Twilight tour, outdoor adventures, arts and culture, northwest history and culinary tourism.

Best of all I will be hooking up with Sandra, one of my dearest childhood friends whom I haven't seen in 20 years, when I am in Seattle.

I leave in two and a half weeks. Oh, and did I mention I will not be dragging the kids along?

Because nothing says "Family-friendly vacation" like leaving the kids at home. :-)

So jealous.

I am changing my degree. That is amazing! You leave in two and a half weeks. That is awesome because we will be in Seattle at the same time. I am incredible jealous of you!

I am soo envious!!! That is where my family would vacation when we lived in Washington and I have such great memories from those trips! My husband and I even went on our honeymoon there. I want to move back to Washington so bad.

Just an FYI so you can sound smart: Sequim is pronounced Squim not See-quim.

Are you taking Jamie, or going completely alone? Either way- without kids is nice!
I obviously took the wrong major at school.

Do you know how this kills me???

I would give anything to be you right now. Except for the raging death thing. That I'd skip.

That sounds awesome!! Aren't you in need of an assistant to come along?

That is awesome! Love all of it, but the free part is great!!!

Nope, no husband either. Someone's gotta stay at home to watch the kiddos while mama plays. :-)

What an itinerary!
Port Townsend is so quaint - and has great kayaking. And the Hoh rainforest is incredible.
You'll have to share about Sol Duc Hot Springs - have heard of it, but that's about it!

What a great reward! Kinda makes it worth the plague, eh? I said that like a Canadian just for you!

At that exact same time I will be traveling, not for free and with my kids, to Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and a week at Bear Lake. The Bear Lake time will be a Family Reunion and I will most likely not be able write a thing about that week on my blog or anywhere else for fear of what the reprocussions to the extended family would be. However, I assure you in advance, the stories will be worth millions. But perhaps you might need the history on each person to get their full worth!

Have a great time!

How do you become a travel writer?

I have a friend who's one but she doesn't really give me any hints. She makes money, I made almost nothing writing a humor column.

I am so delighted for you. And with no kids...even better!

oh so fun! yay for leaving the kids!

Lots of fun places. We are going to be staying around here this summer so I was curious about the Broadmoor. I stayed there years ago but I'm wondering what the kids would do. What do you do when you're there.. I know there's the pool. Also I've always been curious about the YMCA of the Rockies, is that in Estes Park?
Your NW (family friendly) trip would wonderful!

Have a great time!! If only you had visited about 2 1/2 years ago - we could have met :(

We're not leaving the kids, but we ARE "staycationing." We're camping in a yurt for two nights about 10 minutes from home. It's a "power of small" thing: a real-life camping trip, without having to hire a cat-sitter!

Sounds like a fun summer. Fortunately, you live in a state with lots of great places to go. Your Olympic Peninsula trip will make most of us envious, the part about leaving the kids at home anyway.
