Christmas Previews

It was March 2006 when I first made The Big Announcement at my MSN Spaces blog about our new addition to the family:

Jamie's 300-pound baby.

(Note: Babywearing advocates wouldn't want to get anywhere near this beast).

Almost four years later, a finally-finished basement, and the drama of scraping together enough funds to buy the counter top after our original granite contractor stole our money, our old-fashioned soda fountain is finished.

Couple that with Jamie's 84-inch HDTV and I may never be able to drag him out of his Man Cave again.

===========================

Like many of you, we are in the throes of Christmas preparations. But unlike many of you, I am not stressed out in the least. In fact, this will be one of my least frenzied holidays because we aren't throwing our annual Christmas Eve shindig due to Jamie's parents recent move to Utah.

Being family-less and friendless has its advantages.

We're starting a new tradition and are skiing Loveland on December 24th. We are also guilting Jamie's sister into spending Christmas day with us. This process involves bribery because she'd rather sleep in than spend the morning with my sugar-induced children jumping all over her, slurring Santa praises.

I just can't figure out the swingin' single folks these days.

Something we will have in abundance is fine food. My Christmas baking has already been distributed.

On this year's menu: gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, pumpkin fudge, Almond Roca and whipped shortbread.

My beloved husband sampled all the spoils and offered his honest opinion.

"This is the best maple fudge I've ever tasted."

"It's pumpkin."

I'm thinking the man should just stick to old-fashioned soda.

You've inspired me to make something pumpkin flavored when I finally get my baking done. If Jamie spends too much time in his man cave, you can always remind him of the tragic fate of Tad.

The Soda Shoppe is lovely! And suddenly I want to renovate my basement. I'm such a follower...

Follower is good when it means finishing your basement.

And yes, the sad demise of Tad.

I'm both jealous and glad that I don't have a basement that could be converted into a man-cave! But the home soda fountain is still one of the coolest ideas!

I'm still waiting on that bribe. :)

That bribe is you can take my kids for a couple of hrs on Monday. Oh wait. Is that a treat? :-)

I, for one, am shocked that Jamie didn't recognize the pumkin taste.

Well, in all fairness...he grows huge pumpkins, but that doesn't mean he has to eat pumpkin. It almost seems cannibalistic for Jamie to partake...like he is eating a member of the family.

That is a mighty impressive Man Cave.

You make me laugh...can't figure out the swinging single folk. What's with not wanting to be jumped on by sugared up giddy children?

Amber said...

LOL--I never thought of the cannibalistic angle. You may be right. :-)

Mmm, pumpkin fudge. I've never tried it, but it sounds heavenly. Have any extra you want to send my way?

I love your basement! Looks awesome. And Whipped shortbread?? I need the recipe for that, I love shortbread, but can't be bothered with the time it takes to make....

even though it might be considered as a man cave, you must be thrilled to have the basement finished.

Mmmm ... maple fudge (I know, I know, it's pumpkin).

Merry Christmas :)

Whipped shortbread is the easiest ever. It's my mom's recipe:

1 lbs butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
3 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt

Beat in mix master for 10 minutes until fluffy. I topped mine with little pieces of Maraschino cherries. Bake at 350 for 7-10 min.

Thanks for the recipe!! Now to go bake it!!
